2015 PGA Championship Throwback - Jason Day - What’s in the bag?

Back in 2015 at Whistling Straits, Jason Day produced one of the most commanding major performances in recent memory. He became the first player to finish a major at 20 under par, brushing aside Jordan Spieth by three shots to lift the Wanamaker Trophy. It wasn’t just his power or his putting touch that made the difference – it was the way his entire bag worked together, giving him complete control on one of the toughest tests in golf.

Here’s the TaylorMade set-up that carried him to glory.

Driver: TaylorMade R15 460 (10.5°)

Day was known as one of the biggest hitters in the game, but it wasn’t just brute force. The R15 460 gave him the ability to combine distance with accuracy. Its front-track system – with two sliding weights – allowed him to fine-tune ball flight and keep spin down. At Whistling Straits, with its wide fairways and exposed conditions, this driver was the perfect weapon to unleash his power without losing control.

3-Wood: TaylorMade AeroBurner 3HL (16.5° adjusted to 14.5°)

The SM7 line offers so many variations in grind, bounce and finish that you can tailor to how you play. If you like to open the face, hit flop shots, or rely on feel from the rough, SM7 delivers. Reviewers praise its excellent feel and control. SM8 builds on that with slightly adjusted CG and refinements in sound and grind options.

Pros: spin, feel, and broad options for different turf and swing types.

Cons: complexity can overwhelm; some loft-grind combos ideal, others less so if picked poorly.

Irons: TaylorMade RSi TP (3–PW)

Day’s iron play that week was majestic. The RSi TPs were built for elite ball strikers, blending a compact, tour-inspired shape with just enough forgiveness to handle the odd mis-hit. They gave him precision on approaches into Whistling Straits’ tricky greens, but also the confidence to take on tucked pins. The combination of distance control and workability was exactly what he needed to keep momentum all week.

Wedges: TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF (47°, 52° ATV, 58° ATV)

Around the greens, Day relied on TaylorMade’s EF wedges. The Electroformed (EF) nickel cobalt face insert provided incredible durability and sharp grooves, perfect for generating spin. With the ATV (All-Terrain Versatility) sole grinds on his 52° and 58°, he had the tools to play everything from open-face flop shots to low, skipping spinners. On a course as demanding as Whistling Straits, these wedges were vital in keeping his card clean.

Putter: TaylorMade Ghost Spider IB Black Prototype

Every great major win comes down to the putter. Day’s Ghost Spider prototype was rock solid all week, giving him stability on the slick greens and confidence over the big moments. Its high MOI design kept the face square, while the black finish reduced glare and sharpened focus. He holed his share of birdies, but it was the pressure putts – the ones that maintain momentum – where this putter really earned its keep.

Final Thoughts

Jason Day’s victory at the 2015 PGA Championship wasn’t a case of one club stealing the headlines. It was a full bag performance – power off the tee, control with the irons, precision with the wedges, and nerve with the putter. His TaylorMade set-up was built for a player at the peak of his powers, and on that Sunday at Whistling Straits, everything clicked.

Pros: superb feel, clean workability, satisfying look and balance.

Cons: smaller margin for error
