The three most important golf clubs in your bag!

Golfers are allowed 14 clubs in their bag at any one time, and every single one of these that you choose needs careful consideration. Professionals and amateurs alike can agonise over which clubs to include in their golf bag, forever switching ones out and upgrading to the newest models.

This is all well and good if you have the budget to match! But at golfclubs4cash we know that it can be difficult for beginners to know where to focus their budget. After all, it’s not just the clubs that you need to spend money on, but also a golf bag and accessories - and then there’s the cost of the club membership etc. too - it can all add up quite quickly!

Set your budget

For those just starting out as beginners on the golf course, we totally get that you won’t want to be shelling out for up to 14 expensive golf clubs right away, so it’s important to prioritise your buying so that you are spending the larger part of your budget on the most important clubs. The other ones can wait, and you could consider upgrading them in time when you’re getting your handicap down and clearer on the type of club that best suits you for each shot.

The good news though is that expensive doesn’t always mean best for you. The club that will bring out the best in your game is the one which feels most comfortable in your hands, not necessarily the most expensive one. Don’t feel pressured to buy the best in any range - instead, take your time and see if you can try out some friends’ clubs to see how they feel for you.

If you have a limited budget and you need to focus your spending on the three most important clubs, which would they be? Here’s our take on it!

1. Putter

The humble putter is often forgotten about as a club to prioritise by many golfers as it’s the last club you pull out of the golf bag each time. But don’t forget that the putter can be used multiple times, whereas you’re only going to be using your driver once for every hole. Beginners can use their putter quite a few times in order to nudge their ball into the hole. So, we recommend that first and foremost, you find yourself a reliable, good-quality used putter that will support you in your end game and give you maximum accuracy on the course.

2. Wedge

The next club you should focus your attention (and budget!) on is the wedge. There are four main types of wedge to choose from - a sand wedge, a pitching wedge, a gap wedge or a lob wedge, but a pitching wedge is probably the main one to focus on. Wedges are designed for short approach shots - an average of around 120 yards and are used when you need the ball to ascend or descend sharply.

3. Driver

Yes, we know we budged the driver out of first place in favour of the putter, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still deserve a spot in our top three most essential golf clubs to have in your bag. The driver you use is an important consideration, as it’s the club that you’ll use to get the ball a considerable distance off the tee. It’s the longest club in your set and it has the biggest head. You can find out more about used golf drivers and how to choose the right one for you in our drivers buying guide.

While a driver is a vital club to have in your bag, bear in mind that as a novice you may well cause quite a lot of damage to the clubhead with some less-than-perfect shots, so while we recommend buying a good-quality driver to start with, we also advise customers that they may well need to upgrade this club in their set first.
