MAX, LST & SFT – and how they compare to G400, G410, G425 & G430

PING has built its modern reputation on one thing above all else: forgiveness. From G400 through to G430, their drivers have been the go-to choice for golfers who want to hit more fairways without sacrificing distance.

The PING G440 series is the latest step in that evolution. It includes G440 Max, G440 LST and G440 SFT, plus high-launch HL versions, and it builds directly on the G430 platform with a more refined feel, improved look and better performance on low-face strikes.

For golfers shopping new or second-hand, especially through a used specialist like Golfclubs4cash, the G440 sits in that sweet spot: modern, packed with tech and already starting to offer better value than a just-launched model.

Key Technology in the PING G440 Driver

PING hasn’t ripped up the script for G440 – it’s taken what worked in G430 and pushed it on. The main story is lower CG, more stability and better sound/feel.

Carbonfly Wrap Crown
The G440 uses a Carbonfly Wrap crown – a lightweight carbon structure that replaces heavier titanium. That weight saving is pushed lower and deeper in the head to drop the centre of gravity and boost forgiveness, while also helping to create a more muted, premium sound at impact.

Free Hosel & Low CG
PING’s Free Hosel construction removes weight from the hosel area and redistributes it into the head, again pushing the CG lower and closer to the force line. PING describes this as creating their lowest CG ever in a driver, which is a big part of why G440 is so stable and easy to launch.

Hotter, Thinner Face
A slightly lower face height lets PING make the T9S+ titanium face thinner and more flexible. That boosts ball speed across a larger area, including high heel and low strikes that would normally be punished.

29 g Back Weight & Shot Shaping
All G440 heads use a heavy back weight (around 29 g) that can be positioned in draw, fade or neutral settings. This keeps MOI high for forgiveness and allows golfers to nudge their start line and curvature without needing a totally different head.

Trajectory Tuning 2.0 Hosel
The 8-position adjustable hosel gives up to ±1.5° loft change and up to 3° flatter lie options, letting players fine-tune launch and face angle.

High Launch (HL) Options
For slower swing speeds, PING offers G440 HL Max and HL SFT versions with a lighter aluminium back weight, longer lightweight Alta Quick shaft and a lighter Lamkin UTx Lite grip. The result is more clubhead speed and easier launch without changing the overall look.

PING G440 Models – MAX, LST & SFT

G440 Max – The All-Round Fairway Finder
The G440 Max is the headline model and the one that will suit the vast majority of golfers.

Head size: 460cc

Flight: Mid-high launch, mid spin

Bias: Neutral, with adjustable weight to add draw/fade bias

Who it suits: Mid- to high-handicappers, or any golfer who simply wants the most forgiving option

The Carbonfly crown and deep CG make it noticeably easy to launch with stable spin numbers. Low-face hits, in particular, tend to fly better than you’d expect – one of the big improvements from G430 to G440 called out in recent testing.
 
G440 LST – Lower Spin, Better Player Friendly
The G440 LST (Low Spin Technology) head is the option for quicker swingers and confident ball-strikers.

Head size: Slightly more compact than Max

Flight: Mid launch, low spin

Bias: Subtle fade bias, neutral in feel

Who it suits: Better players or consistent drivers who create too much spin

The CG is a little more forward than in the Max, which drops spin and produces that strong, penetrating flight that better players love. It still carries the same Carbonfly Wrap and Free Hosel construction, so you don’t lose forgiveness completely – it’s more “players-forgiving” than truly punishing. 

G440 SFT – Anti-Slice Specialist
The G440 SFT (Straight Flight Technology) is all about helping slicers.

Head size: 460cc, but with more heel-side weighting

Flight: Mid-high launch, mid-high spin

Bias: Strong draw bias to reduce or straighten a slice

Who it suits: Golfers who habitually lose the ball right

By moving more mass into the heel and using a draw-biased back weight setting, the SFT makes it much easier to square the face, turning big blocks and slices into playable fades or even gentle draws. Golf Monthly specifically highlights the G440 SFT as a go-to for players struggling with a slice.

How Does G440 Compare to G400, G410, G425 and G430?

G440 vs G400
The G400 and especially the G400 Max were famous for ultra-high MOI – over 9,000 in some tests – in a slightly smaller 445cc head.

Compared to G400, the G440:

Uses Carbonfly Wrap for a lighter crown, whereas G400 relied on Dragonfly-style ribs in a titanium crown.

Feels quieter and more muted, whereas G400 could sound a touch louder and more metallic.

Offers more sophisticated weight tuning and better low-face ball speed.

If you’re coming from a G400, G440 will feel like a more refined, modern version of that same high-MOI DNA.

G440 vs G410
The G410 was PING’s first driver with a moveable back weight in the head plus an 8-position hosel, a big jump in adjustability from G400.

Compared to G410, G440:

Retains the adjustable weight and 8-position hosel, but adds Carbonfly Wrap and Free Hosel for a lower CG and improved sound.

Delivers more forgiving performance on mishits, particularly low on the face.

Think of G440 as G410’s adjustability combined with G430-level feel and forgiveness.

G440 vs G425
The G425 Max was widely praised as one of the most forgiving drivers ever, with a 26 g tungsten back weight and MOI around the 10,000 mark.

Compared to G425, G440:

Keeps forgiveness very high, but improves feel and acoustics, which some golfers found a bit loud in G425.

Uses Carbonfly Wrap rather than Dragonfly crown technology, so more weight is pushed even lower.

Offers better playability on low-face hits, an area specifically highlighted in 2025 testing of the G440 line.

If you liked your G425 Max but wanted it to sound and feel a bit more premium, G440 is that next step.

G440 vs G430
The G430 already took a good leap in sound, feel and looks over G425. Golf Monthly and others noted improved acoustics and a modest but real distance bump.

Compared to G430, G440:

Adds Carbonfly Wrap for a cleaner look and more weight efficiency.

Further improves low-face performance, so the worst strike you make is less punishing.

Pushes feel and sound a little closer to that “tour-quiet” profile.

In short: if G430 was the big update on G425, G440 is more of a refinement and polish than a revolution – but one you can feel on course.

Should You Consider the PING G440 Driver?

If you’re browsing drivers on Golfclubs4cash and trying to decide where to land in the PING family:

Gaming something older (G400/G410)? G440 will feel more modern, sound better and be noticeably more stable on low-face hits.

Coming from G425? Expect similar forgiveness with cleaner sound and slightly more refined feel.
