Tiger Woods is nothing short of a golfing legend. In 1997 he was the youngest man to win the US Masters at Augusta (and the first African American man to win the title, too). Since then, throughout his career he’s won 14 more majors and has been PGA Player of the Year 10 times. He had a few years where his performance dipped, but winning the 2019 Masters confirmed his comeback and he now has 82 PGA Tour wins under his belt.
Golfers everywhere pay close attention to what Woods has in his bag and often will look to buy a similar set of new or second hand golf clubs to match. He’s a traditionalist in his approach (having used a Ping grip on his Scotty Cameron putter for decades now) and is slow to change his irons, shafts and grips. He has been more adventurous with his drivers and fairway woods, embracing advancements in technology.
Here, we’ll take you through the golfing equipment that Tiger’s used throughout his career in order to rack up such an impressive playing record. Perhaps it might give you the inspiration you need to upgrade your playing equipment?
Tiger Woods - golfing equipment through the ages
Back in the day
During Tiger’s early playing career, Woods was a fan of Cleveland 588 RTG wedges, Mizuno MP14 irons, Titleist woods and a PING Anser putter. He was using the Titleist Professional 90 ball. This set-up helped him win his third US Amateur title in 1996 (when he also signed an unconfirmed $20m five-year deal with Titleist). Then in 1997 he bagged the top spot at the 1997 Masters with the help of a King Cobra driver and a Scotty Cameron putter.
Titleist continued to be the main golfing brand of choice for Woods as he progressed through his career, although he switched to a Nike ball in 2000 when his $105m deal with Nike was extended for five years. More sponsorship came along in the way of Buick, and that year he won the Open, the US Open and the USPGA Championship. A year any golfer would be delighted with!
In 2002, Tiger switched to a Nike driver, and he won the 2003 WGC-Amex Championship with a set of Nike irons. And in 2004, he introduced the Nike Ignite 410cc driver to his game.
Then, in 2006/2007, Nike launched the Sasquatch range, and Tiger used the fairway woods up until 2010. He also used the Sasquatch 3 and 5 woods, along with a Nike SV 60-degree lob wedge. And in 2009 he introduced the new Nike SQ Driver into his bag, along with VR blade irons.
In 2010 Woods added a lot of new clubs to his bag, such as the Victory Red Tour driver, VR Pro wedges and a Nike Method putter, also experimenting by changing his SQ fairways to VR Pros. Woods then switched to a slightly smaller 420cc driver and brought back the Sasquatch 5 in 2012. He kept hold of his Nike Method 001 putter and One Tour D golf ball. Fast forward to 2014, he put a prototype Nike Vapor Speed into play, with Nike VR blades and wedges.
2016 until recently
When Nike announced they were no longer manufacturing golf equipment, everything changed for Tiger. Everyone was waiting to see what he’d be playing with at the Hero World Challenge, with Nike being such a mainstay of his golfing equipment up until now. He appeared using a TaylorMade M2 driver and M1 fairway woods. This led to much speculation that he would sign to TaylorMade (or possibly even buy the company!), and sure enough at the PGA in February 2016 he signed a deal with TaylorMade.
2019 saw Tiger add the M5 driver, M5 and M3 fairway woods to his bag, alongside his trusted Scotty Cameron putter and a Bridgestone ball. He won a momentous victory at the 2019 Masters with an all-TaylorMade golf club set, and in 2020, he added a TaylorMade SIM driver.
2022 and beyond
All eyes were on Woods at the 2022 Masters - his first PGA tournament since a serious car crash in February 2021. Here he pulled out the same set-up that he’s been using since 2017 - a TaylorMade Stealth Plus+ driver, a TaylorMade SIM 3-wood, a TaylorMade M3 5-wood, and TaylorMade P 7TW irons.
