Fairway Woods: FAQs

What’s the difference between a fairway wood and a 3-wood?
They’re both the same thing! We explain the reasons for this in more detail in our Ace Series: Golf irons. Whether you call it a fairway wood or a 3-wood it’ll likely have around 15 degrees of loft.
What’s the defining feature of a fairway wood?
Fairway woods have two important features to notice - firstly they have a higher loft to lift the ball higher out of grass and out of obstacles, and they also have a shallower face which is great for better distance.
When do I use a fairway wood?
Golfers like to use their fairway wood for when they need more accuracy and precision than a driver would deliver, but distance is still important, e.g., for long par-5s.
How many fairway woods should I have in my bag?
Most golfers choose to carry a 3-wood and a 5-wood in their golf bag, because they are both great options for getting yourself out of many different tricky scenarios on the golf course.
